At TURN, we’re incredibly proud of Courage to Call: our support program run by and for military veterans. Courage to Call’s services include mental health and substance use disorder, call-in support, and referrals to community resources to assist veterans with their post-military needs.

Courage to Call has changed lives. During outreach at a local safe camping site, Veteran Outreach Specialist Mateo Montell met a homeless Marine Corps veteran in need of food and assistance. The veteran shared that his wife and children were out of state and they needed to relocate to San Diego. Mateo provided donated groceries and shared information about the Stand Down event, encouraging him to contact SSVF/VVSD for housing assistance.
The family received consistent support from Mateo for groceries, employment resources, and housing leads. In July, the family welcomed a new baby, and by August, they were finally able to move into a permanent apartment, though it was unfurnished.
Mateo reached out to Humble Design, whose team fully furnished the family’s new home. The family’s joyous emotional reaction captured what Courage to Call stands for: community, compassion, and connection.
We encourage you to help Courage to Call make a difference by donating to TURN today.
